Over the last week Ynys Môn Island Games Association have delivered the latest school twinning project. Leading into the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey next month, year 5 pupils in both Ysgol Gynradd Llanfairpwll on Ynys Môn and Vauvert Primary School on Guernsey have become members of the thriving partnership in place since Ynys Môn Island Games Association began delivering the project in 2015.
Iolo Hughes (athletics; 800m, 1500m) and Emma Roberts (football) delivered practical sessions for pupils in each school based around teamwork, fitness and athletics. This followed an opportunity for pupils on Ynys Môn to write a postcard to pupils on Guernsey highlighting local culture, the Welsh language, and the local sporting opportunities they partake in.
The second session, enabled pupils at Vauvert to receive their postcards and to write a response to be delivered in return to Llanfairpwll.
Supported by the Gymdeithas Ynys Môn, the project has allowed pupils, teachers and athletes to experience a different culture, language and experiences, particularly embedding the importance of Ynys Môn on the international stage.
The aim is to maintain the relationship between both schools and the athletes until the International Island Games this summer, before supporting both schools to continue to develop learning opportunities into the future. We look forward to seeing pupils from Vauvert Primary School supporting their home island as well as their newly adopted island of Ynys Môn during the Island Games this summer.
