We’ve now sailed past the ’50 days to go’ milestone for the Island Games in Guernsey this summer and preparations are stepping up. One of the more successful Ynys Môn sports is now able to announce its lineup.
Since Rhodes 2007, Ynys Môn have picked up sailing medals in every edition of the Island Games that the sport has featured. Sailing is Ynys Môn”s most successful sport by number of gold medals with a total of nine (plus three silver and two bronze).
Ynys Môn’s most decorated sailor returns to lead the team. Dominic Breen-Turner has three gold medals and two silver medals to his name. Joining him will be Michael Thorne, another one with a glittering career. He’s also had three gold medals from Isle of Wight 2011, Bermuda 2013, and Jersey 2015 (all from the Team Events). Alongside these two metal collectors are newcomers Josh Metcalfe and Ryan Seddon. Josh grew up in Brynsiencyn and now lives in Liverpool. He was the UK number 1 junior sailor in the Optimist Class and podiumed many times throughout his adult career in UK national and European events. Ryan sails SB20 and laser dinghy across the UK. He also competed in the SB20 World Championship 2022 in Ireland.
The sailing events in Guernsey will take place at Guernsey Yacht Club right in the main town, St Peter Port. The racing will take place every day between Sunday and Thursday, but as always with sailing, will be dependent on conditions being suitable. The events being run are:
- ILCA 7 (formerly Laser Standard Rig)
- ILCA 6 (formerly Laser Radial Rig)
- Sailing Team Event
With a team steeped in podium success and international experience, hopes are high for more medals in Guernsey. Good luck to our team!
