Both the men’s and women’s football squads have been announced for this year’s Island Games in Guernsey. With a compact schedule and squads limited to 20 players, competition has been tough to make the final selection. Changes can still happen if a dreaded metatarsal breaks in a David Beckham style.

The team will be managed by Dan Gregg from Llangefni Town and assisted by David Jones.
Manager Dan Gregg had this to say ”It was a really tough job to pick a squad for this tournament and I think it’s a reflection of how healthy women’s football is currently at the moment with three sides on the island all doing well in the league; Llangefni currently 3 points behind 2nd place; Treaddur Bay picking up points and Amlwch Town hot on the heels with games in hand. The young players from Ynys Mon that Bangor 1896 have are incredible and we desperately tried to get a few of them in but at their current age they are going through what can be a busy time with exams and trying to plan out careers. Overall I think we’ve got some really good technicians mixed with grit and determination and up top we have some incredible power & pace. We have a friendly upcoming against Isle Of Man and this should show us where we are. Really looking forward to Guernsey now!!“
Ynys Mon Women will face Guernsey and Western Isles in the Group Stage.

Star of the gold medal win on home soil in 2019 as a player, Mel McGinness will be managing the side, ably assisted by Island Games regular Martin Jones. The packed schedule will see the men’s side face Isle of Man, Falkland Islands and Shetland. Those will be three tough games in three days and good utilisation of the squad will be needed.
Mel had this to say to us: “I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead. Having to rebuild the squad from 2019 has been hard, but with a lot of the young lads from the gold winning team now four years more experienced and the new faces mainly being young and full of energy, I think we have the right mix to push for that top spot in the group and hopefully make the semi finals and compete with the bigger islands once again.”
