The Ynys Mon Men’s Football team has today announced a provisional 25-man squad for this summer’s Inter Island Games Football Tournament to be hosted on Ynys Mon for the first time ever.
18 of the 25 players in the squad represent clubs on Anglesey at present, with the chosen 25 including players with significant experience across the Welsh domestic system, and many of whom have competed in the International Island Games previously.
The Men’s team will soon be announcing further preparatory friendlies ahead of the tournament fixtures commencing on June 16th with a Sunday evening fixture against Western Isles at Holyhead Hotspur, and the club’s management outlined the process of selecting this provisional squad.
Ynys Mon Men’s Football Manager Campbell Harrison said:
“It’s been a long process, we’ve watched countless games to scout players, had three trial games before Christmas and two friendlies since, consulting with clubs across the island and further afield and giving the opportunity to over 100 players to stake their claim to represent Ynys Mon at this summer’s tournament, and we’re now at a point where we can announce our provisional squad.
“The Ynys Mon 2019 Tournament will be fantastic for the island, but a very challenging week for the players. We’ve potentially got five games to contest in six days, so the lads are going to have to be really fit and that is one of the factors we’ve been considering when selecting this squad.”
Men’s Assistant Manager Iwan Williams added:
“We’ve been working hard on building a training programme for the next few weeks to put us in the best possible position for this summer’s tournament, and we’ve got some big friendly fixtures coming up too which will further aid preparations.
“The provisional squad is really, really strong – it will have to be cut down again before the tournament starts, but it will be up to the players to make the case for their inclusion in the final squad and show the qualities that we’re looking for in terms of work ethic and technical ability. We’re looking forward to putting our final preparations in place.”
